Desert Voices Fostering Community Through Song

Welcome NEW Director!

Desert Voices and
Reveille's Men's Chorus welcome their newest Artistic Director, Brayton Bollenbacher!

The nationwide search attracted impressive talent from far and wide, but ultimately Brayton’s vision, musical style, and commitment to mission-driven programming made him the perfect match for both choruses.

“I am so excited about being able to work with Desert Voices and Reveille Men's Chorus. Knowing the rich history of community advocacy and musicality, I am excited to continue that growth process with the groups. Also, I look forward to continue to spread love and acceptance throughout the community and Arizona. My goal is for us to continue engaging our queer community and allies and bringing our message of love and acceptance to youth and 'soon-to-be' allies.” – Brayton Bollenbacher

Brayton brings a unique leadership perspective to Desert Voices and Reveille Men’ Chorus. After receiving Bachelor’s degrees in Vocal Performance and Sexualities from The Ohio State University, Brayton earned a Masters of Social Work from the University of Washington, Seattle. Since 2011, Brayton has worked as an Inpatient Social Worker, living out his commitment to equity and social justice daily.

On top of his social work experience, Brayton has also served the LGBTQ+ community with his choral expertise, particularly LGBTQ+ youth. In 2011, Brayton became the Director of Diverse Harmony, the country’s oldest gay-straight alliance youth chorus. Under his direction, he more than doubled the Diverse Harmony’s membership and significantly developed the long-term financial viability of the chorus. He also successfully created Diverse Harmony’s small ensemble group, Spectrum, in 2014.

Brayton was able to bring 47 singers from Diverse Harmony, as well as 16 of Spectrum’s singers to GALA Chorus Festival 2016, where Brayton also directed the festival’s “Youth Invasion Chorus” (consisting of 130 16- to 26-year-old singers). Brayton also reached out to area Gay-Straight Alliances during his tenure as Artistic Director of Diverse Harmony, and even assisted in the formation of a successful youth chorus in Portland, Oregon. We are especially excited for Brayton’s leadership as both organizations attempt to develop youth outreach initiatives in the future.

We are proud to have Brayton as part of both of our organizations.
Please join us as we welcome him to the southwest later this summer.

"Fostering Community Through Song"

Desert Voices is Tucson's premier gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and ally chorus. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing Arizona beautiful music and to forging a positive and resolute LGBTQA presence in the community. Our unique chorus welcomes all voices to attend our rehearsals and come to our performances, regardless of age, gender, race, creed, or sexuality. Our members are diverse in voice and in background, of gay and straight singers, of all ages and identities. We strive to bring quality, unique music performances and the harmony of community to Tucson. Our purpose is to give a voice to those whose songs go unheard.

Desert Voices is an inclusive chorus organized to provide the opportunity for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and supportive others to sing together in order to:

  • Build community within and outside the Chorus through our love of music.
  • Produce shows that are entertaining and musically excellent.
  • Perform music that reflects the lives of the LGBTQA community.
  • Promote an ongoing, positive LGBTQA presence in our community.
  • Advance positive social change in the larger society.
