Shawn Cullen is excited to be appointed Artistic Director for Desert Voices after serving as Interim Conductor during their historic 25th Season! Mr.Cullen, master educator, conductor and artistic director, has quickly earned a reputation for his high-energy teaching style and fresh, innovative artistic nuance. Over the past 10 years Cullen has held positions as Director of Instrumental/Vocal Music/ Theater Arts and served as Fine Arts Mentor Teacher with Arizona school districts as well as the School of Music at the University of Arizona.
In a short time, Mr. Cullen has enjoyed a diverse professional career as a versatile and multifaceted artist continuing to set himself apart from others with his eclectic background and dynamic skill-set. As a performer Cullen has traveled throughout the United States, Mexico and South America as a vocalist, instrumentalist and conductor. Mr. Cullen is thrilled to be in his 2nd season as Artistic Director/Conductor for Desert Voices after celebrating their historic 25th Season as Tucson’s premier LGBTQ chorus. He is excited to continue the Desert Voices mission dedicated to bringing Arizona beautiful music and to forging a positive and resolute LGBT presence in the Tucson community. Now in his 6th year as a Artistic Director/Conductor with Reveille Men’s Chorus, Mr. Cullen has continued his exciting artistic vision including leading Reveille to their historic 2013 debut performance with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra for “Broadway Rocks!” as the first LGBTQ Chorus to perform with a professional orchestra in the state of Arizona.
With the esteemed honor of working with both Desert Voices and Reveille Men's Chorus, Mr. Cullen is overjoyed to be among the very few conductors nationally to serve as Artistic Director for multiple GALA Choruses.
In the teaching world, award-winning ensembles under Mr. Cullen’s direction have been the recipients of the “Arizona Arts Spotlight Award” and “Superior and Superior with Distinction” ratings at competitions held in Arizona and California. Students from Mr. Cullen’s programs have gone on to receive acceptance in such prestigious programs as Julliard, The New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. Cullen currently holds the position of Principal Conductor for The University of Arizona’s ART (Arizona Repertory Theater) where he continues to work with the Broadway stars of tomorrow with recent credits including “Into the Woods”, “Secret Garden”, “Batboy: The Musical”, “Avenue Q”, “Nine”, and “Oklahoma!”.
Mr. Cullen holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education and a Master’s of Music in Conducting from the University of Arizona. Mr. Cullen is a proud member of GALA Choruses, American Choral Director’s Association, Arizona Music Educator’s Association, and the National Association for Music Education.
